This project was started in January 2006 by a small group of gem enthusiasts located on three continents! We have never met in person, but we are bonded by our relentless fascination (a near obsession) with gems and the study of gemology. We envisioned an online destination that would be a totally comprehensive Gem and Gemology site. We chose a [[wiki]] as the content manager so all like minded folks could contribute to it and help build it into the finest source of free gemological information in existence!
If you are reading this, there is a good possibility that YOU have something to offer this project! Photographs of gems and gem-minerals, inclusions, charts, insights, lore and legend information, localities, mining, metaphysical attributes are all welcome and encouraged. Without YOU, this can not be the site we hope it will one day be! Please be inspired to join our effort.
Each page contains submission links. Every time you find a topic you can add to, click on '''submission''' and submit your information. If you need any help with adding pictures or charts, just let us know. We are always available to assist.
We have tried to keep an order and structure to our pages. If you find that there is an area that could be added or approached in a different way, let us know.
We have, thus far, organized topics like this:

* Basic (sections for gemology [[Introduction_to_Gemology#Becoming_a_Gemologist|students ]] and all those with a love of gemstones)
+
{| border="1"
* Advanced (for topics that can be explored on a more technical level)

Perhaps one day, these pages will serve as an online course on gemology, but our intentions will never be to hand out diplomas nor certificates, as only credentials from accredited gemological schools are useful in our industry.

At all times, we encourage you to check the writings, ask questions and get involved. Only then will you come out as

Welcome to The Gemology Project

The Gemology Project is a non-profit gemstone and gem science wiki-style database for anyone interested in gemstones and gemology (gemmology). Every month we highlight a gemstone and a piece of gemstone identification equipment to help us all understand more about the wonderful world of colored stones and diamonds. The Project begins with a general tutorial as an Introduction to Gemology.

We invite every gemologist, gemstone dealer or gem enthusiast to share their practical and theoretical gemological knowledge and help this central gemology repository grow.
You can simply click on the "submission" links at the top and bottom of each page and your information will be included as soon as possible.

You can navigate through the site with the aid of our Contents page
