Occurence and color

It has been suggested that the quahog is found mainly between Maine and New Jersey and does seldom if ever occur south of NJ. From online reading I get the impression that it does occur further south, but that they do not have the purple sections around the lip of the shell (the color that is most prized).
There are little resources on quahog except for the usual online texts and it would be nice if we could refer to actual (written) research. Some info on wampum beads and jewellery would also be nice. --Doos 07:47, 6 May 2007 (PDT)
