Optical properties of gemstones

The way in which the behaviour of light is affected by gemstones is important because this leads to:

  • Practical considerations about the way and shapes in which gemstones are cut, in order to display their beauty to the best advantage
  • The observation and measurment of that behaviour as a means of identification of gemstones.
