This Barion cushion, cut designed by Graham, weighs 11.40 carats. No deposit in the world produces uniformly great color in tourmaline, but I love a great deal of the colorful tourmaline that is produced by Afghanistan. All the material is from primary pegmatites and comes dearly through blasting rather than sorted out of alluvial gravel, like most tourmaline is mined. This gem was cut from a wonderful piece of clean rough with good dimensions, that was a beautiful crystal section before it was every touched by a lapidary. It and an almost identical cushion cut of 23.64 carats, represent the best gemstones I was able to cut out of a lot that I purchased some years ago. While not sea foam, the green colors blend beautifully and flash in the rich, but not overly dark body.
